New Perks for MJ Cruise in May 2016!

We're updating our cruise information.  Holland is now offering a free beverage package, up to $400 in stateroom credit and two dinners in the specialty restaurants if you book soon.  You can review the sailing itinerary and the perks at the AmericanWay Cruise link below.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email us at mahjonggdrs@gmail.com

We can't wait to play MJ on this transatlantic cruise and we'd love to have you join us.

We're packing up our Mah Jongg sets and setting out to sea.

On May 19, 2016, the doctors leave for a transatlantic cruise from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. We'll be stopping along the way in Bermuda, the Azores, Portland UK, Brugge Belgium and finally Amsterdam The Netherlands.

Of course, we'll be be playing Mah Jongg as we cruise!  Players from our regular games are joining us and we know that all of the 'at sea' days will be filled with Mah Jongg games.

We would love to expand our group of players and invite you to join us.  We'll contact Holland America about securing a place for us to play.

This is not a tournament, but an opportunity to travel and play Mah Jongg with some new friends.

If you have an interest in this cruise, you can find more info at the 14 Day Azores and Normandy Explorer or on American Way Cruise Vacations  (our booking agent who usually has a lower price.)

The Prinsendam is a small ship compared to other Holland ships and books up quickly.

If you have any questions, email the doctors and we'll get back to you.

Piscataway, NY Aug. 2015

Wow, has it been more than a week since we came back from Piscataway?

The doctors had the best time at the Four Season’s Mah Jongg Tournament in Piscataway.

This 3 day tournament is a favorite of ours. There are 12 rounds of play and additional opportunities to enroll in mini-tournaments for a small fee.  So, mah jongg lovers can
enjoy 19 rounds (76 games!) of play in a weekend.  That’s a lot of great games!

Many of the players are familiar returnees but we did see some new faces in the crowd, reinforcing the fact that Mah Jongg is enjoying a new resurgence.  And we love to see so many mothers and their daughters, aunts and their nieces, and sisters enriching their bonds through mah jongg. Not to mention the groups of friends who extend their home game fun for an entire weekend.

Joanne Bourne is a master at organizing and facilitating tournament play.  She is an absolute pleasure to deal with! And we love the fact that participants must complete all tournament rounds regardless of their standing in the scores.

The next Piscataway tournament is in November.  You can see all of the scheduled tournaments at the above link.  Susan and I will  be there in November.  We hope you will be there as well..  if we haven't met you yet, be sure to say hello!

Summer School is in session!

It's so much fun to make a 'hard hand'.  You have to challenge yourself sometimes when only pairs come your way.

Here are some that our summer students have made and shared with us!
Thank you Kathryn for sharing your photos!

I think this is one of the hardest hands on the card this year.  Deciding which way to go on the sevens and eights can be confusing.  And I always wonder why it's show from high to low....instead of seven, eight, nine!

Five pairs in this hand....NOT so easy!

And of course, the one we call 'the big hand'!
How many of you have made it already this year??

The Doctors meet Bubbe Fischer!

We have posted previously about the book Searching for Bubbe Fischer by Karen Gooen. Yesterday the doctors traveled across the river (the Hudson) to meet Karen for lunch.

We had a delightful time comparing mah jongg stories and mah jongg blogs. (Karen's blog)

And of course we each had our own story about how we each came to play this addicting game.

left to right:  Susan, Barbara, Karen

Today the doctors traveled to the Bronx and participated in a tournament to benefit Riverdale Temple.  We played 6 rounds, had a wonderful lunch and met Linda Fisher  (another blogger) who was overseeing the tournament.

The Doctors were very successful in their 'rounds' today!  Barbara won the hand of the day and came in third and Susan tied for first place.

As this was Riverdale's first tournament, we wish them luck with future Mah Jongg events.

Christening a New Set

It's really an "old" new set....and not that new either.  You'll notice that we used some of the tiles in our header above when we first started to blog.

It was a birthday gift a few years back and I love it.  It also has 5 beautiful dark green bakelite racks....but no jokers!

So I finally got stickers from Charli and today I put the stickers on some of those incredible worker tiles.  There were also 4 blank tiles to sticker.

Tonight it will see its first play in many, many years! Maybe it will bring me luck.....

Looking for a game...

Another one of our readers is looking for a regular game.  If you live near Joan and can suggest a game for her, please send her an email.  Everyone needs a Mah Jongg game or maybe two or three!

She writes:

Hi,
I have seen several people trying to find a game and I am one of those needing a game.  I just moved to Jackson NJ (4 Seasons Metedeconk Lakes) and am looking for a regular game.  I have subbed in several games and will continue to do so, but I would really like a game I could count on every week. Any help is appreciated.  My name is Joan Engoran and my email address is:  joane1224@gmail.com
