Meeting friends from sea....

and thinking about another Mah Jongg at Sea!

On Friday Barbara and I met with Rita and Donna two new friends from Arizona that we met for the first time on our cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Copenhagen in April earlier this year.

They were in NYC for the Food Show and we connected with them to visit the 9/11 Museum.  It was a solemn experience but not one not to be missed if you're in NYC or visiting here.

We had lunch after and talked about taking another cruise to sightsee and play Mah Jongg.

Transatlantic cruises are the best for that.... lots of  'sea days' for  MJ and stops along the way for sightseeing.   If you haven't read about our wonderful mah jongg at sea last spring here.  On our 17 day cruise we played with 25 different players on our ship...every morning and afternoon on 'sea days'.

Here's the new cruise we're looking at:

This cruise leaves from Rome on October 26, 2017.  (Yes that's next October...lots of time to plan)
It arrives in Fort Lauderdale on Nov.8, 2017.  It's a 13 day cruise with 2 stops in Spain and 1 in Madeira before crossing to Florida.

It is a Holland America cruise again.  They were so accommodating on our last cruise....reserving a card room for our MJ play every day we were at sea.  They also provided coffee, tea and pastries in the room each day....a nice touch.

If you would like to join our email list to be kept informed about this cruise, send an email to me (Susan) at: and put CRUISE in the subject line.  We'll keep you posted as plans go forward!

A Tournament in Scarsdale, NY

Susan and I, along with some friends from our weekly mah jongg games, participated in the SSTTE (Scarsdale Synagogue Temples Tremont and Emanu-El) Tournament in Scarsdale, NY.

We love this tournament! Elizabeth Rothstein and her team at the synagogue have been so successful at putting together a great event.  The tournament offers 8 rounds of fast play, plentiful and delicious breakfast and lunch with homemade treats to further entice, spacious and comfortable tournament and dining rooms, and many prizes for high tournament scores and also ones for special hand and high round.  And the players are just lovely! We have come to know so many people through tournament play and we enjoy connecting with them, catching up, and making plans to attend future tournaments.

What a great way to spend a day!! carful what you say in the ladies room during a tournament.  The Mah Jongg world is relatively small and conversations overheard are often about people that other players know.

Before I close this out, just a question…when you are at a tournament do you play more offensively or more defensively that you do at home?? Thanks in advance for sharing.

Day 12 of Transatlantic Cruise

On April 29th we'll be stopping in A Coruna, Spain.  I love to check out port reviews on Cruise Critic, but A Coruna must be a new stop for the cruise lines, because it's not listed here and there are no reviews of the shore excursions on the Holland site.  But click on the city name above and you'll find some information that I discovered. BTW....this city is often called La Coruna.

But the weather should be warm and what's not to like about Spain??  If you're already booked on this cruise, you can enter your booking number on the Holland America site and look at the shore excursions. There are only 3 and they're very expensive...unless you travel to the ancient Roman fortified city of Lugo for $118. per person.

First Stop: The Azores

The first stop on our transatlantic journey is the Azores, an archipelago belonging to Portugal.  (At this point we will have had 6 days at sea to play Mah Jongg!)

We stop first in Horta, a city in the western part of the archipelago.

From Horta you can take a panoramic drive to view the crater at the center of the island. (3000 Ft. elevation)
On the return to Horta you'll have a magnificent view of Capelinhos, the volcano that rose from the sea in 1957.

Second stop:  (Next day)  Ponta Delgada, Azores.  More about that city later.

If any of you need more info about the cruise, just email and we'll point you in the right direction.  If you've booked the cruise, let us know!

Something for Everyone...Even Comedy At Night!!

We are so excited about the cruise we are planning because there will be something for everybody!

First of all, the price is wonderful!

For sure, we plan to play Mah Jongg every sea day, for several hours each day.  And we would love to get as large a group as possible to join in the fun.  Though not a tournament, we already have a room reserved for our games, and we have also been tossing around ideas to make the games a little different from our weekly home games.

And if you’re not a mah jongg player??

There’s plenty of time on the sea days to take advantage of life aboard the ship with your friends and family.  It is truly a luxury to be able to disconnect and relax or take advantage of the many activities available on the ship.

This cruise is making 6 wonderful stops before its final Copenhagen destination.
We will be posting information about each stop over the next few weeks.
